Pankaj Rai

Biography

Pankaj Rai is a seasoned business and technology leader with over 33 years of experience spanning management consulting, financial services, large-scale offshoring, and enterprise analytics. Currently serving as Group Chief Data and Analytics Officer at Aditya Birla Group - one of India's largest and most diversified conglomerates - he leads the group's analytics and data maturity journey across its many businesses, driving outcomes through data science, horizontal data platforms, and a sustained focus on building people capability.

Pankaj's career is a study in deliberate, curious reinvention. He began as a management consultant at Feedback Ventures in Delhi, before moving into project financing with ICICI - a role that gave him deep exposure to credit, risk, and relationship management over four and a half years. He then joined GE Capital's commercial financing business, where he worked as a credit underwriter, portfolio manager, and Six Sigma leader - developing a rigorous, process-oriented lens that would shape his leadership style for years to come.

A British Chevening Scholar, Pankaj spent time at the London School of Economics before joining Standard Chartered Bank, where he served as Business Planning Manager for the bank's shared service centers across India and Malaysia - his first significant exposure to large-scale cross-border operations.

It was at Dell, Bengaluru, where Pankaj truly came into his own as an analytics leader. Over nearly 11 years - first as Strategy Director for Dell's offshore business, and then as Director of Analytics - he built one of India's most respected internal analytics teams from the ground up, working across marketing, pricing, supply chain, strategy, online, and financial services domains. This chapter of his career is widely regarded as a landmark in the development of enterprise analytics capability in India.

At Wells Fargo, he led two foundational initiatives - a large-scale transformation program anchored in effectiveness, efficiency, and experience, and the creation of an internal digital product management team (SDI) where he developed deep expertise in agile product thinking.

In August 2021, Pankaj joined Aditya Birla Group as its first Group CDAO, a role in which he continues to shape how one of India's most iconic business groups thinks about data, decisions, and human potential.

An alumnus of IIT Delhi (B.Tech, Electrical Engineering) and IIM Ahmedabad (MBA - General Management), Pankaj brings to every conversation a rare combination of analytical rigour and genuine humaneness. He is a passionate long-distance runner, a community builder, and a practitioner of what he calls "Full Stack Human" leadership - the conviction that truly effective leaders cultivate the full range of their human capacities, not just their professional ones. His reflections on leadership, data, and life are shared through his YouTube channel, which offers a window into how he thinks about the long game

Bihar does not lack history, talent, or resilience—it lacks collective urgency and sustained support. For decades, its story has been told in fragments, often defined by what it is not, rather than what it can become. Grand Trunk Road Initiatives was born to change that narrative—through research, dialogue, and platforms that bring Bihar back into meaningful national and global conversations.
But vision alone is never enough.

Every archive built, every conversation hosted, every young mind inspired—these are not abstract ideas. They require belief, participation, and support from those who see value in rebuilding something larger than themselves. GTRi is an independent effort, driven not by institutions of power, but by conviction that Bihar deserves better—and can achieve it.

If you believe Bihar’s future should not be left to chance, if you believe ideas can shape economies, and if you believe that change begins with those willing to step forward—this is your moment to contribute.
Support GTRi. Strengthen the effort. Be part of a movement that is working, quietly but persistently, to give Bihar the platform, dignity, and momentum it deserves.
Because the future of Bihar will not be written by a few—it will be built by many.
